Alice sat in the library. It was late Saturday afternoon and Alice had some research to be doing for university. She was glad to see the library was pretty quiet, not many people surrounding her. Alice clicked double clicked on the internet icon and it opened up. The homepage was full of recent news, murders, celebrities getting married and other general stuff. But the headline that caught her eye was “Freak Thunderstorm”. She quickly clicked on the article and started to read. Alice was a little disappointed to see no mention of anyone claiming superpowers from this storm. Perhaps it was just her and Tristen, but Alice couldn’t shake the feeling that were more out there.
Since meeting Tristen Alice had been working on her power, she had managed to master how to freeze people on demand, it was pretty simple. All she needed to do is to concentrate on the person or object and think about freezing it, then with a quick swish of her hands the subject ceased movement. Now she needed to learn how to unfreeze people and freeze for longer. Alice found if she really wanted to freeze something then it would stay frozen for much longer, but if it was just a mistake freezing then they started moving again after a few seconds.
As Alice carried on reading the article she wondered to herself whether people would actually come forward and claim they had superpowers. She knew she defiantly wouldn’t, people would probably think she’s gone mad. She read how the thunderstorm had caused thousands of pounds worth of damage due to the huge ice blocks that fell from the sky. Scientists were describing it as global warming, saying humans were the cause of the storm. There must have been more people affected by the storm if it had taken place all over London. Alice didn’t believe she was the only person hit by the lightening, but finding the people would be the problem, she had just met Tristen by chance. She couldn’t exactly go up to people and ask them up front whether they had powers or not.
Alice opened up a new web page and went to google. She quickly glanced round to see if anyone was looking, she then typed in ’Thunderstorm England superpowers’ and hit enter. She watched as the results flooded onto her page in a matter of seconds, but none of the web pages stood out to her. They were all irrelevant. She clicked on a few links, but there was nothing on there to do with the storm. So Alice closed it down and went on to do her university work. She had only had it set on Friday, but she wanted to get it done as soon as possible. She could worry about the storm and the freaky powers later.

The library was common haunting ground for the young girl. Marie could more often than not be found sitting at one of the tables, hidden away amongst the bookshelves and the volumes that whispered so many secret words to her. Usually though, the girl was more often in the fiction area, curled up on a soft armchair, a book on the armrest, buried in the world conjured up by the printed words, oblivious to everything else. But not this time. Not, Marie was working this time.
She was sat at one of the tables near the bank of computers that ran along one side of the room. She'd spent a while earlier colecting books from the shelves around them, which were now piled on the desktop near her as she thumbed through them, one at the time, her quick mind easily absorbing the information. Truthly, Marie was more of a math's and scientific person than a literature person, and although she did enjoy curling up with a good book, she was in her element here.
The storm and the consequences of the storm was a puzzle. And she was determind to solve it. Post-it notes marked pages in the books she had read, and a couple of pages in the black-and-white spiral bound notebook open in front of her, were full of her neat, copper-plate handwriting. This was the first time she'd properly sat down, and just researched the storm. But after talking to Evan, and later Tristen, her mind had been working overtime. Learning that it wasn't just her...in fact, learning that she had something that was meant to be a scientific impossibility had made the brunette's mind buzz with possibilities.
She wasn't finding much out though. The books contained information about the weather (and about fire and telekinesis, for Evan adn Tristen) but the only facts she could find were from the pile of comic books she'd picked up earlier. And those facts...weren't backed up with science, so weren't really facts. Plus, there was no information in a book about that storm...it had happened too recently, and too quickly, to have been recorded and printed. Looking at the patterns and information about ordinary storms didn't give her much to go on.
She sighed, twirling her biro absently in her neatly manicured right hand, running her other hand through her hair. And looked around, her eyes flicking between the few other people in the building. And then paused in all movements as he eyes focussed on one person. Or...more to the point, one person's computer screen. From where Marie was sat, she could make out the words being typed into the Google search engine. About...the storm. Coincidence? It could be?
She chewed on her lip thoughtfully, watching as the other girl skimmed through information, before apparantly closing it down and returning to whatever it was she had been doing. Perhaps she should...ask? But what if the other girl hadn't been doing anything like that...The worst that could happen was that Marie would be embarressed. Of course, the idea of talking to a stranger, willingly talking to a stranger, was quite a frightening one...but if it found out more about the storm...
Marie made up her mind quickly, then stood up before she could change it, grasping her notebook in both hands and clutching it and her pen to her chest, then moving around her table and towards the computer bank. Her footsteps slowed in her heels as she gew nearer, her nerves growing a bit more if that was possible. But she didn't stop, not until she was behind the blonde girl. Then she took a deep breath and opened her mouth to speak, timidly.
"Excuse me?"

Alice furiously typed away on the computer, researching Vivienne Westwood. Her work was to research about a fashion designer, Alice had chosen Vivienne Westwood, mainly because she was in love with her bags and clothes. Alice clicked through pages and pages of information, copying and pasting a few bits and bobs into a word document for later reference, but there was still one thing that was lying at the back of her mind. The storm. No matter how hard she tried Alice just couldn’t focus on work, which frustrated her as she wanted to get the work do as soon as possible. First the storm gave her this power that was interfering with her life and now it was preventing her from doing her work.
Alice opened up google yet again and started to looking through different newspaper articles, seeing if she could find anything. She looked at the Daily Mail, The Sun, News of the World, but there was nothing. They all reported the same thing, a freak storm and different people‘s perception of the storm. Alice continued clicking through articles, her eyes scanning the page for a mention of powers, or supernatural, or anything along those lines. Then something clicked. If people were describing the storm then they must have been in it, which means they could have been struck by lightening and affected. Alice took her notepad out of her bag and quickly scribbled down a few people’s names off a few articles. It was a long shot, but it was worth it.
Alice then typed in “Freezing superpower”, just to see if there was anybody claiming to have her power too. She found a website about Molecular Immobilization. It describing her power perfectly, so that must be what her power is called. Sounds better than saying she freezes people, she can now say her power is Molecular Immobilization. The only problem was the site was about a TV programme about people with superpowers. No websites about real people claiming this power. Alice sighed and sunk back into her chair. She thought she would of found something, somewhere. There were people all over the world claiming different things such as seeing ghosts, talking to the dead or even walking on water, but no one claiming they could freeze people.
Alice heard the footsteps behind her but it never occurred to her that the footsteps were heading towards her until she heard a girl’s voice from behind. Alice jumped and quickly shut the internet page down. Alice spun round and was about to freeze the girl, but then thought otherwise. Maybe it wouldn’t be the best idea to use her power in a public, look what happened last time, Tristen caught her and her secret was almost revealed.
"Yes?" Alice replied with a smile, to show the girl she wasn’t the type of person to bite her head off or anything for talking to her.

Her nerves were tarting to show again. Not that Marie wasn't generally nervous, if she thought about it. But approaching a stranger? She flushed slightly as the other girl kept tapping away, just...wondering what the hell she was really doing. Her feet shuffled slightly - or shuffled as much as you could shuffle when you were wearing strappy high heels, which was actually more like a nervous clacking sound...but the point still stood. Or, at least, she thought it did, but that was distracting her really. She'd come over, approached another girl, an older person who she didn't know at all, for a reason.
A reason which was further made clearer in her mind as her brown eyes fell upon the computer screen. This close, she was able to see the words more clearly, and although it wasn't polite to read over someone elses shoulder...Marie couldn't help but feel that it was a good thing to do on this occasion. Especially when the words 'freezing superpower' were typed on the screen, following by a long list of results from the search engine. Her breath hitched slightly, and she couldn't help but wrap her arms a little tighter around the notebook in her hands.
She jumped, minutely perhaps, but still jumped, when the girl replied. It wasn't that long after she'd awkwardly announced herself, but long enough for Marie to have gotten lost in...well, spying, to not be paying attention. She blushed slightly, flicking her eyes back towards the girl, the tidle wave of nerves crashing upon her once more.
"I...yes, Hello. Sorry...But..." she started to stammer, before closing her mouth again, breathing in deeply through her nose. She could do this. Perhaps it would seem rude...but obviously, unless she was highly, mortifyingly mistaken, she wasn't the only one researching the Storm. She knew she wasn't the only one who'd been affected, after all. That had already been shown clearly to her. So after a pause, she continued, in a stronger, more determind voice that before. "Sorry for seeming rude, but...what were you researching just now?"
Although she was sure she sounded more determined, and less walk-over-able...her voice was still quiet, and timid. But Marie couldn't help that.

Alice‘s eyes gave the girl a quick up and down look. She was mainly studying her clothes. That’s was liked to Alice, see what other around her were wearing. "Nice shoes" Alice commented, looking at Marie’s feet, then she looked back up at Marie. She felt she needed to explain to the girl why she was looking her up and down, she didn’t want Marie thinking Alice was judging her because that was something Alice didn’t like doing.
Alice glanced behind her shoulder, just to make sure her page had fully shut down. She didn’t want Marie looking at what she was researching. Instead the desktop was just open on the screen now. Alice noticed the girl’s eyes trailed behind her, looking at the computer screen. She knew people were just curious people though, looking at what other people were doing, or listening to other people’s conversation. Alice liked to sit and watch people go about their daily lives, and occasion she listened into people’s conversation. It was hard not to. Alice was a very curious person.
Alice’s mouth hung open slightly. She had no idea how to respond to Marie’s question. Should she just be truthfully and say she was researching the storm? Alice then cursed at herself in her head for being so stupid. She should of realised researching the storm in a public place, such as the library, was just not a good idea. She then wondered if the people who worked at the library could see what she was looking at or could look at the internet history and find out. Alice told herself not to panic and freak out like she did with Tristen. She needed to ‘play it cool‘, but Alice had no idea how to ‘play it cool’. "Erm…" Alice’s voice trailed off. She didn’t know whether to just openly say she was researching the storm or lie and say she was searching something else. Alice knew the girl had seen what she was looking at though, otherwise she wouldn’t of asked. "Oh, nothing really. Just researching that storm that happened the other week" Alice tried her best to keep her voice calm and controlled, she just needed to act like she knew nothing, "I‘m a journalist" Alice quickly added, she nodded her head slowly, praising herself in her mind for the believable cover story, "Yeah, I‘m writing an article about the storm… you know, just about how… freaky it was" Alice then fell silent, she didn’t want to come across as rambling. She then debated with herself whether it would be a good idea to mention anything about powers, "Infact, I‘ve had a few people come forward and say the storm affected them in strange ways… like supernatural ways" Alice narrowed her eyes slightly, watching the girl’s reaction carefully.
Alice wondered whether Marie had been affected by the storm at all, why else would she be interested? Or perhaps Marie was a news reporter too. She looked too young to be a policewoman though, so that put Alice’s mind at rest slightly, but then again Marie could be a policewoman, an undercover one. She was doing it again, over thinking the situation. Alice calmed herself down, she needed to stay composed.

Marie opened her mouth to say something more, something intelligent, but then stopped. The comment about her shoes had thrown her off guard, a little bit. She wasn’t used to people noticing things like that. “I...uh, thank you...” Well...they were nice. Marie was someone who had grown up around money, and who liked pretty things. Buying an expensive pair of shoes meant nothing to her...but at the same time, she wasn’t materialistic. She gave money to the RSPCA after all.
Her heart starting thudding harder in her chest, so loud to her that she was sure that anyone else could hear it. A mixture of excitement and...nerves. Because her words, the other girls words. She was researching the storm. She was about to open her mouth to ask why, to ask whether she had ever found anything interesting, but then froze. “A...a journalist? Oh...” And just like that it felt like her heart had frozen. Her mother had always told her to stay away from the press – they were leeches, feeding on small tidbits. Then again, her mother was rather biased, after the incident with her mother, and also, Marie wasn’t one to care. But a journalist, about this?
Coming over to speak to the girl after simply looking at the screen over her shoulder was a mistake. Tristen had warned her about being found out, and Marie didn’t want that. Being found out when she wasn’t really sure what it was that she could do just yet was a frightening thought. And then as the other girl mentioned supernatural, she quickly took a step backwards, hugging her book tighter to her chest. “Supernatural? That’s silly...but it was freaky. I was just...wondering. Forgive me. Sorry to intrude.” She paused, realising how odd this must look. A reporter would see through that, most likely. Coming over, after being nosy and rude, and then backing away so quickly.
She dithered for a moment longer, just a few seconds, and then straightened a little, reaching up with her free hand to tuck a strand of loose golden hair behind one ear. “I was just researching the storm as well. Like you said...it was freaky. I’m a...geography student. Umm...Marie.” She ventured out with a polite, but shy, smile, dropping the hand that had been tucking the hair away, then holding it out timidly for the other girl to shake. She still didn’t know whether that was a good thing. Neither Tristen nor Evan had minded really, and Tristen had even laughed. But it didn’t help with the fact that this was the first older teenage girl Marie had actually volunteered to speak to...and she didn’t know how to greet them. So yes, her movements and words were awkward. But polite, of course. She was always polite.

Alice gave Marie a small smile. She liked to compliment people about their clothing. She was going to ask her where she brought the shoes from, but instead she let the conversation flow, as she knew the girl hadn’t come over to discuss shoes, even though Alice would much rather discuss shoes than the storm. Every time someone mentioned the storm Alice’s stomach would do somersaults. She had overheard two old ladies discussing it on the bus that morning, but it wouldn’t be long before people would forget about it and find something else to talk about, but Alice would never forget. She sometimes questioned reality though, still convinced she was in some kind of coma and this was all just a dream.
Alice nodded her head slowly, "Yes, a journalist" She insisted. She glanced back at her computer, checking again, just making sure her internet page hadn’t some how popped back up again. Alice was starting to feel nervous herself, just nervous about the whole situation. Alice slipped her hands under her legs, so that she was sitting on them, hoping it would prevent her from using her power in front of the girl, plus the girl might not even freeze like Tristen didn’t. She just wished she could just be open about her power sometimes.
Alice watched Marie back off slightly as Alice mentioned the superpowers. Alice let out a fake laugh, "I know… silly right?" Alice replied glancing down at her hands. The thought of having superpowers felt a little silly, it felt surreal. Superpowers belonged in comic books and on television, not here in the real world. She was sure there were many people around her who were hiding secret powers, including Marie. "It‘s okay, you‘re not interrupting anything" Alice said, though that was a lie, Marie was interrupting valuable time, time she could be using to finish her university work off. Alice worried slightly that she might not get it in on time if she didn’t get some of it done today, despite the fact her deadline was weeks away. Alice decided to forget about her work and thought talking to Marie would be for the best, she may be able to find out something out about the storm and the freaky powers it caused.
A geography student. Seemed believable enough though Alice did find it hard to believe people sometimes, she always wondered if people were telling to the truth or not. "Do you go college… or uni?" Alice enquired. She couldn’t tell how old the girl was, she looked older than 16 though. Alice took Marie’s hand and shook it, she noticed that Marie’s hand was shaking slightly, but didn’t question why. "I‘m Alice" She grinned, letting go of Marie’s hand and slipping her hand back under her leg. Alice kept her eyes focused on Marie, trying not to notice anything around her, anything that would make her use to her power.

"That's...nice." Marie said, aware, terribly aware in fact, that she was shifting from foot to foot and searching desperately for something to say. For someone of her intelligence...well, it wasn't unheard of her not having anything to say. In which case...well, she lied. Which was sounding like quite a good idea. "I'm considering training to become a journalist. What's the pay like?" She tilted her head, trying to look interested. In actual fact, Marie wouldn't be a reporter for all the money in the world. She wanted to go to university...and perhaps go into politics. Only, going into politics would mean she'd have to get over her fear of talking to other people. But she could overcome that. The feeling of being in control would help.
She shifted her feet. Again. And then realised, and so tightened her arms around her books, forcing herself to stop. This was rather...awkward. "It depends on the context..." she murmered, ducking her head, looking up at the girl despite actually standing higher than the girl was sitting, blinking her hazel eyes through her soft brown bangs. "On some occasions the idea of powers could be quite...sensible." Was that another lie? The idea of superpowers was fantasy. It wasn't fact, not that she could find out...and yet, she had proof. Both from her, from Evan, and from Tristen. She nodded though, a little relieved that she wouldn't be interrupting anything. That was...good.
College? Or Uni? She wouldn't be able to pass for going to Uni...and really, it wasn't that long before she started college, so another small lie about that couldn't actually hurt, could it? "College," she said quickly, nodding, "Doing...geology as well." She smiled faintly at the introduction, nodding her head. Again. She was repeating things quite a lot now, wasn't she? That also had to stop. "Nice to meet you."

The pay? She would imagine the pay was pretty good for journalism. Alice hated lying, but she had no clue about journalism, the only journalism she was familiar was fashion journalism. "The pay is good actually" Alice replied quickly, trying to sound convincing. But then again, Marie had no reason to doubt Alice’s words. "It‘s… It‘s a good career choice" She lied. She had no idea if it was a good career choice or not, Alice didn’t really like the idea of being a journalism. She wasn’t good with words, or doing at essays or anything along those lines.
Alice resisted the urge to frown at Marie’s comment about powers being sensible. Alice disagreed, it just wasn’t a sensible idea, people would think she had gone mad if she were to announce the fact she had this superpower. People just didn’t believe in that sort of stuff. Perhaps a handful of people may, along with ghosts and aliens, but most people were sceptical about it all. Alice glanced down at her hands, it was bizarre thinking she could freeze objects and even people using just her hands. "Well… these people who claim powers from the storm seem to think it‘s sensible" Alice replied, looking from her hands and at Marie, "But obviously most people don‘t believe that"
Geology. Alice wasn’t entirely sure was Geology was, she thought it was probably something like Geography. "Sounds good" Alice responded, "What is Geology though? Is it like Geography?" Alice thought she would probably sound a little dim not, but it wasn’t her fault she didn’t know what Geology was. It was never a subject Alice looked into when applying to college.
"Sit down if you like" Alice suggested, glancing at the free chair next to her. She turned back to her computer. At the bottom of the page it read, “Freezing powe…” Alice’s panicked and quickly shut the internet page down. She hadn’t noticed that.

Something about Alice's voice was starting to nag at the back of Marie's mind - a little doubt as to whether the words uttered by the older girl actually rang with the truth. But Marie ignored it, because doubting someone who was freely talking to her was considered rude. Also, she didn't really want to consider the posibility that the girl was lying. Wondering whether she was lying would make her wonder why...lying about being a reporter while gaining more information about the powers? She was wary enough already with the idea that she could be researched. Considering that this girl was simply looking into more things, more information to explain what was going on, like she was, was daunting. Tristen's words came to mind again...just how many of them were there, out there?
"Well...I'll...look into it some more," she finished lamely, ducking her head again. More imagination was needed now, to flush out her words, but Marie was no poet. Her words were stated simply, without being cushioned by similies and metaphors. She was a scientist who dealt with facts and figures. No more, and no less. "I'll have to finish comparing it to the other avaiable future options."
Why would people be publically claiming that something had happened to them? That made no sense, in Marie's mind. "Surely...if something like that did happen, and it did exist...surely it wouldn't be broudcast. I think the reports you find on forums are less likely to be true than ones you gain through face to face meetings." Rumours fueled almost everything, in this day and age. Simple hints would be enough for people to claim something was different about them, just so they could become famous. Famous for the wrong reasons though, if the government decided to cover it up. But she didn't dismiss the idea of it. Why would she?
"Oh, the study of the Earth," she said quickly, sinking back into a comfortable world of definitions and meanings, "They study of rocks and minerals and the layers of the Earth. Earthquakes as well, I think." Not that she knew about that...but she had done Geography with a Geology teacher for a while. And she'd been rock mad. Well, mad about rocks.
"Oh, thank you," she said polietly, sinking into the seat, smoothing the skirt of her dress over her lap, "I didn't want to impose."

Alice knew she didn’t sound convincing. She was never a good liar, she stumbled over her words too much, panicked then ended up telling the truth anyway. So she thought it was best if she were to just stay quiet about a journalism career. "Yeah, no point rushing into things" Alice responded with a small smile. For some reason she doubted Marie’s words, but she wasn’t one to question. After all she had only just met this girl.
Alice nodded her head. She was right, people weren’t going to openly admit to their power. Alice certainly didn’t. She didn’t want people thinking she was some sort of freak, but after meeting Tristen she was sure there was more people out there affected and she wondered if Marie was one of them. Still there was no way to tell. "True" Alice responded with a smile, "I think if I was one of them people I‘d keep it to myself" She quickly added. Which is what she was doing. Alice sometimes thought about informing her sister about her ability, but she knew her sister would just laugh at her, calling her stupid. For all Alice knew her sister could have been one of those affected by the storm. "Surely if a lot of people stepped forward and claimed they did get some kind of power from the storm, then people would have to believe them" Alice said, she was talking to herself though. It was an idea, to get people to come forward about their abilities. She quickly snapped out of her thought and came crashed down to reality. "Just saying" Alice faked a smile.
Study of the earth wasn’t something that interested Alice, but each to their own. She couldn’t help but notice Marie’s choice in subject was rather odd if she wanted to become a journalist. Alice wasn’t an expert in journalism but she could imagine that Geology would get you far in the world of journalism. Still Alice kept this point to herself, she didn’t want to undermine or seem patronising. "Sounds fun" Alice responded.
When Marie sat down Alice turned back to her computer slightly, still facing Marie though. "Did you witness the storm?" Alice asked, titling her head to one side. Her idea was trying to find out as much as possible from Marie. See if Marie was one of those with a power.

Marie nodded, opened her mouth to say something, changed her mind and then closed her mouth again, wetting her lips in a nervous manner. That was rather unsightly, wasn't it, standing with a wide open mouth and saying nothing, but she couldn't help it - that end of the conversation had dried up in her mind. What more could she say about something she had no interest in at all? Of course, she could list some facts or something...but that probably wasn't the most social step to take, and would make her seem...well, weird. She ducked her head quickly to avoid looking any more stupid.
She was relieved when she started talking about the powers agian - that was something she could almost deal with...or attempt to deal with anyway. "Unless you knew there was more than just you like it out there..." she said quietly, glancing up at her, reaching up to tuck her hair once more behind her ear. It was odd, really - Marie wasn't the most outspoken of people, not at all in fact - she preferred to hide behind her hair. But either after the storm, or after meeting others and talking to people willingly for the first time in her life, she was able to willingly say that. And hint, because...why else would someone else be looking at storms and powers?
"No!" she said quickly, her face paling a little, "Because, because...that would attract the wrong sort of attention. People without them, if it was possible for them to have them, which it isn't, of course...well, they'd panic, and be afraid and then everyone would be rounded up and...and..." She gulped down a breath of air, and then closed her mouth. That was enough of that. "Just saying..."
She nodded slowly. "I was...in it, really." Wait, perhaps she shouldn't have said that? What if that got her into trouble, bad trouble, that...couldn't be good. But there wasn't really any going back now. "Outside when it came. Did you see it? I'm...studying it for a project. Was wondering what you thought about it, if you did see it...of course." Maybe this was why she didn't talk to people much. She seemed to babble, despite knowing how bad manners it was.
